Competition in our rapidly
expanding industrial and technological world is the driving force of innovative
solutions to seemingly impossible problems.
When profits are determined by the efficiency of the production line, cost of
maintenance or repair is far overshadowed by loses caused by downtime. Heroes
are made and jobs are lost by small decisions that affect machine performance
and scheduled maintenance.
A bearing failure can cause a major maintenance problem. Modern manufacturing
procedures often create situations such as extreme temperatures or other harsh
environments that can seriously shorten bearing life. Most often, bearing
failure is the result of lubricant or seal failure.
Cobra Solid Lubricants™ for bearings are uniquely engineered to exhibit
extraordinary performance in the most difficult applications.
Our proprietary process seals steel bearings with our unique graphite based
dry solid lubricant. The process can be applied to most ball or roller type
bearings, self-aligning, cylindrical, tapered or housed units. Bearings can have
an I.D. as small as 1/8” or an O.D. as large as 25”
Our unique graphite mixture has the consistency of a paste when it is
inserted into the bearing that has been prepared for processing. A computer
engineered pressure and heat treatment is followed by a precise run-in and
finishing procedure. When the process is complete, the Cobra Solid Lubricant is
dry and bonded only to the bearing’s steel cage. Additional seals and
re-lubrication will not be required, even in extremely harsh environments!
High vacuum, extreme temperature, or wet (even submerged) applications will
offer new engineering possibilities for manufacturing efficiency with Cobra
Solid Lubricants.
The Cobra Solid Lubricant™ Advantage
- Cobra Solid Lubricants have a wide usable
temperature range – from minus 250F (minus 160C) to plus 660F (plus 350C).
- Cobra Solid Lubricants exhibit low starting torque
that is constant across the entire usable temperature range.
- Cobra Solid Lubricants will not be washed out by
steam and are unaffected by most common solvents, acids, and alkalis.
- Cobra Solid Lubricants are environmentally safe and
will not drip or fling even in extreme temperatures.
- Cobra Solid Lubricants will effectively seal the
bearing, protecting it from dust, dirt, or other contaminants that could
cause premature bearing failure.
- Cobra Solid Lubricants are dry - eliminating the
possibility of contaminants "sticking" to the bearing as a source
of bearing failure.
- Cobra Solid Lubricants have extremely low out
gassing characteristics in high vacuum applications - even at very high
temperatures.
- Bearings processed with Cobra Solid Lubricants need
no additional lubrication – ever! Reduce down time and you reduce
maintenance costs!
- Cobra Solid Lubricants may extend bearing life ten
times or more!
Where Should Cobra Solid Lubricants™ Be
Used
Extreme High Temperature Application
Our extreme temperature formulation and processing of Cobra Solid
Lubricants is available for applications with continuous operating temperatures
between 450F and 660F. This special formulation is ideal for use in
furnaces, conveyor ovens, kilns, hot air blowers, flue dampers, etc.
High Temperature Application
Our high temperature formulation and processing of Cobra Solid
Lubricants are capable of continuous operating temperatures between 250F and
450F. The lubricant will not drip or fling and area contamination due to
leakage is eliminated
Normal Temperature Application
Even in applications where temperature is not
a critical factor, Cobra Solid Lubricants can provide improved performance and
bearing life. Many manufacturing operations require free spinning bearings in
dirty environments. Only Cobra Solid Lubricants can provide an effective
seal without drag.
Very Low Temperature Application
Bearings using Cobra Solid Lubricants maintain constant low starting
torque even with temperatures in the cryogenic range. The efficiency achieved by
this characteristic will result in longer motor life and energy cost savings!
High Vacuum Applications
Cobra Solid Lubricants are especially effective in high vacuum
application, even at high temperatures. Out gassing is kept extremely low and no
other contaminants are released.
Dirty or Harsh Environments
Cobra Solid Lubricants are not petroleum based products and will not
attract or hold dirt or dust particles that may be in the air. The bearing is
effectively sealed by the lubricant leaving only a microscopic gap between the
lubricant and the rings.
Submerged applications
Cobra Solid Lubricants are not soluble in most common solvents,
acids, or alkalis. They are the ideal lubricants for bearings used in pumps that
would wash a conventional lubricant out. Chemical or steam cleaning of machinery
will no longer require the relubrication or replacement of bearings.
Limited Accessibility
Cobra Solid Lubricants are the perfect choice for bearings that will
become inaccessible for relubrication once they are installed.

Technical Information
Cobra Solid Lubricants™ can be used with virtually any style bearing
(except needle bearings and some thrust bearings) that has a metal cage
separating the balls or rollers. Bearing size can be as small an I.D. as 1/8”
or as large an O.D. as 25”. To be processed with Cobra Solid Lubricant, the
bearing must have a metal cage. Some full complement bearings and wheels
can also be processed with Cobra Solid Lubricants.
Bearings processed with Cobra Solid Lubricants are filled
from the inner to the outer race and for the width of the bearing. The
microscopic clearance between the Cobra Solid Lubricant and the metal rings of
the bearing ensures protection from dirt,
dust, or other contaminants. Contaminants small enough to migrate into the gap
can not latch onto the dry solid lubricant to clog the ball path.
Normally, additional seals or shield are not required, even in high contaminant
areas.
The dry solid lubricant deposits a 2 micron thick film of
graphite on all friction surfaces of the bearing. Because of this, and the
expansion of the metal which will occur at high temperatures, the recommended
clearance for applications up to 250F is C3 and the clearance for applications
up to 660F is C4.
Other
factors affecting bearing life, especially at high temperatures are speed and
load. Ordinary steel bearings suffer significant loss of hardness at
temperatures above 300F. For application above 250F, heat stabilized steel
bearings are recommended. When using bearings processed with Cobra Solid
Lubricants, especially in high temperature and/or high speed applications, a
slip or light interference fit is recommended between shaft and bearing.
Cobra Solid Lubricants are not recommended for high impact
applications. Vibration or moderate impact will normally not effect the
lubricant.
Cobra Solid Lubricants are not rust inhibitors. Normal
care should always be taken to protect bearings in corrosive applications.
Starting torque of
bearings processed with Cobra Solid Lubricant is similar to that of free
spinning bearings. Minimum load to prevent ball skid is similar to a dry
bearing.
Bearing can be processed with Cobra Solid Lubricants only
at UTA facilities. We can supply the bearing with the solid lubricant complete
or you can supply the bearing for us to process. If you supply the bearing, it
must be unused, corrosion free, meet our size and type requirements, and be
suitable for the intended application.
Cobra Solid Lubricant may extend bearing life up to ten
times or more!
